Situation Analysis

The Maternal and Child Health Division implements programmes in Malaria and Child Survival health areas. Through the programmes PS/Kenya aims to keep children alive until their fifth birthday by working in health areas that affect them most.

The goal of the Kenya National Malaria Strategy (NMS) 2009-2017 is to reduce malaria related illness and death by two-thirds of the 2008 levels. Key to this is scaling up access to malaria prevention and treatment to all persons living in malaria risk areas.

PS/Kenya works in the areas of malaria prevention and treatment to positively influence health behaviours of communities and health professionals. Programmes seek to increase access to and use of Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets and appropriate malaria treatment. We utilise behaviour change communication interventions to influence prevention practices, symptom recognition and treatment seeking behavior of caregivers.

The Millennium Development Goal No 4 targets reduced child mortality with a target to reduce by two-thirds, between 1990 and 2015 the under five years mortality rate.

PS/Kenya works in the areas of diarrhoea management and nutrition which both contribute significantly to child mortality in Kenya. In diarrhoea management we seek to increase awareness about the severity of diarrhoea and promote improved household hygienic practices including household water treatment and hand washing with soap. Our work in nutrition seeks to minimize nutrient deficiencies in the community.
