Situation Analysis

Kenya is faced with high levels of poverty and a high diseases burden compounded by high levels of food insecurity. Over half of the population is living on less than US $ 2 per day. Malnutrition is a problem of public health significance.

Recognizing malnutrition as a problem, and obstacle to overall development, the Government of Kenya (GoK) has developed a National Food Security and Nutrition Policy and Strategy. The objective of this is “ensuring that all Kenyans throughout their life enjoy at all times safe food in sufficient quantity and quality to satisfy their nutritional needs for optimal health.”

Food Fortification is included as an important strategy for addressing national food and nutrition security. In 2005, stakeholders from industry, government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and; UN agencies were mobilized to form the Kenya National Food Fortification Alliance (KNFFA).
