Situation Analysis

In Kenya, less than half of married couples use modern family planning methods - condoms, pills, injections, implants and intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCDs). The unmet need for family planning is high; one in four married women either do not have access to family planning services or lack information or motivation to use services.

Population Services Kenya (PS/Kenya) helps to bridge this gap by distributing quality family planning products at highly subsidised prices, educating communities and distributing education materials, and improving the knowledge, skills, attitude and performance of health care providers in the provision of quality family planning services.

The FEMIPLAN range of family planning products, including the Depot Medroxyprogesterone Acetate (DMPA) injectable, Combined Oral Contraceptive pills (COCs) and male condoms was launched in 2000. The pills are packaged in a convenient pack of one cycle each, including seven extra iron pills to boost iron levels during menstruation, and are available over the counter at any private health facility or pharmacy. The injectables are packaged in an all-inclusive pack containing the vial, syringe and alcohol swab, and can be purchased by health care providers at any private health facility or pharmacy. The male condoms are strawberry scented; they come six in a pack and are widely available at private health facilities and pharmacies, small shops, supermarkets, bars and other retail outlets.
