Situation Analysis

In Kenya the unmet need for family planning has stagnated at 25% over the last 10 years. As much as use of contraceptives has risen steadily from 33% - 39% in 2008, trends show increase in short-term methods and a decline in use of long-term methods. For example use of Intra-uterine Contraceptive devices (IUCDs) among married women has been on a decline from 4.2% in 1993 to 2.5% in 2003 and 1.6% in 2008.

Over the last 20 years large scale family planning communications in Kenya have been lacking. This has contributed to entrenched myths and misconceptions especially on the long-term methods of family planning. Recognizing that over 40% of family planning services and 50% of intra-uterine devices (IUCDs) are supplied through the private sector, PS/Kenya partnered with the private sector to support the major role that the private sector plays to provide quality family planning services and introduced the Tunza Family Health Network.
