Commemorating the International Day of the Girl Child

On October 11th, Kajiado County came together to celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child, embodying the resilience and determination of the community in advocating for girls’ rights. This year’s theme, “Girls’ Vision for a Future Free from FGM,” emphasized the importance of protecting girls and fostering a safe, supportive environment for their futures. The event was organized by the Anti-FGM Board-Kenya, with significant contributions from Population Services Kenya and other stakeholders.

The day began with a vibrant procession to the Deputy County Commissioner’s grounds. Students from local schools united to raise awareness about girls’ rights and the urgent need to eradicate harmful practices such as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Their enthusiasm conveyed a powerful message: it is time to end FGM and protect girls’ futures.

Throughout the day, children from the Maasai community delivered impactful performances through songs, poems, and dramas, addressing critical issues like FGM, child marriage, teenage pregnancy, and education. These presentations underscored the necessity of empowering girls and breaking the cycles of harm they face.

The chief guest, PS Aurelia Rono of Parliamentary Affairs, delivered an inspiring address, encouraging the young girls present. “Girls in this community have dreams as big as any others. Education is the key to unlocking those dreams and building a future where every girl is safe, valued, and empowered,” she stated, emphasizing education as a powerful tool for change.

Prominent women leaders, including PS for Gender and Affirmative Action Ms. Anne Wangombe and Anti-FGM Board Chairperson Ipato Surum, echoed her sentiments. CEO Bernadette Loloju of the Anti-FGM Board also urged the community to protect girls’ rights, reminding everyone that with education, young women can achieve greatness and lead the way forward.

The day concluded on a hopeful note with the planting of trees, symbolizing growth and a brighter future for girls everywhere. Girls from primary and secondary schools received sanitary towels, ensuring they have the necessary support to succeed in their education. Local anti-FGM champions were recognized and awarded certificates for their exceptional efforts in protecting girls from harmful practices.

Population Services Kenya (PS Kenya), through the Accelerate project, has been actively supporting survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) in Kajiado. Since 2021, Accelerate health facilities in the area have assisted 3,548 GBV survivors with medical care and counseling services, providing crucial support to those in need.

This year’s celebration served as a powerful reminder of a community united for change. With education, support, and empowerment, Kajiado is working towards a future where every girl can dream, achieve, and live free from harm.
