Delivering Sustainable and Equitable Increases in Family Planning

For six years, the Delivering Sustainable and Equitable Increases in Family Planning (DESIP) program worked to ensure women and girls, especially the young, rural, and marginalized, could safely plan their pregnancies and improve their reproductive health.

Funded by UKAID and implemented across 19 counties with a modern contraceptive prevalence rate (mCPR) below the national average, PS Kenya led the consortium to reduce maternal and child mortality through increased access to voluntary family planning (FP).

Our Focus Area

1 Increased Awareness and Acceptance of FP

  • Designed 19 county-specific SBC strategies using the 4-stage Keystone Framework.
  • Reframed “family planning” as “life planning” to improve acceptance among men and adolescents.
  • Reached 11.4M women and girls via radio and 5M youth online through campaigns like Chagua Kipanga Maisha.
  • Mobilized 1,400+ trained community champions, including CHPs, men, youth, PWDs, and CBDs.

2.Improved Availability of FP Services

  • Conducted 4,699 outreach and in-reach activities targeting remote and marginalized groups.
  • Trained and deployed 198 Community-Based Distributors, counseling 487,816 women and providing FP methods to 206,175.
  • Integrated CBD programs into county health systems for sustainability.

3.Improved Quality of FP Services

  • Distributed 4,000+ FP service kits and equipment across 19 counties.
  • Trained 1,020 healthcare workers on LARCs, C4C, adolescent-friendly services, and IPC.
  • Institutionalized mentorship, CMEs, and whole-site orientations to improve provider attitudes and reduce stigma.

4.County Capacity Strengthening

  • Integrated FP into county planning, financing, and health systems.
  • Supported data-driven decision-making through improved collection, audits, and review meetings.
  • Advocated for policy and budget allocations; several counties allocated funds for CHV stipends.

Advancing Family Planning for All

Millions of women in Kenya still face barriers to accessing family planning, particularly adolescents, rural communities, and underserved groups. DESIP transformed this reality by embedding FP within county systems, expanding access through community channels, and reframing FP as a matter of choice and dignity.

By tackling stigma, strengthening health systems, and prioritizing equity, DESIP laid the foundation for lasting reproductive health gains, contributing to reduced maternal and child mortality and advancing Kenya’s progress toward universal health coverage.

Building Futures with Girls at the Center

Adolescents face unique challenges, stigma, misinformation, and restrictive norms that can limit their health and choices. A360 transforms this reality by placing girls at the heart of the solution. By amplifying their voices and partnering with communities, PS Kenya creates pathways for healthier, more empowered futures where every girl can thrive.
