Yasmin Hamisi, a 25-year-old mother from Kajiado County, has emerged as a powerful advocate for family planning and awareness of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Her journey, supported by the Ewangan Community-Based Organization (CBO) and PS Kenya’s Accelerate Project, illustrates the transformative impact that access to information can have on individuals and communities.
Accelerate: A Comprehensive Program
Accelerate is a Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and GBV program funded by the Embassy of Denmark in Kenya and implemented by a consortium led by Population Services Kenya (PS Kenya). The program aligns with the ICPD25 Promise, striving for zero unmet need for contraception, zero preventable maternal deaths, and zero instances of gender-based violence and harmful practices—collectively known as the “three zeros.”
Yasmin’s story began with the Ewangan CBO, a grassroots organization formed by community members who recognized a significant gap in health knowledge. With the support of the Accelerate Project, Ewangan overcame early resource challenges, gaining essential teaching materials and the ability to engage effectively with local residents. Their outreach targeted diverse age groups and included both men and women, focusing on family planning and GBV awareness.
A Transformative Experience
Before engaging with the Ewangan team, Yasmin had limited understanding of family planning options. Her journey began when she attended skits and training sessions that introduced her to child spacing concepts. This newfound knowledge empowered her to select a family planning method that best suited her needs, adjusting her choice based on personal experiences.
“Through Accelerate, I learned it’s okay to give each child time to grow before bringing another into the world,” Yasmin shares. “Now, I feel more empowered as a mother, knowing I can provide the attention my child needs.” Her experience highlights how a single workshop or training can profoundly impact lives, especially in communities where access to such information is limited.
Advocating Against GBV
Yasmin’s empowerment extended beyond family planning. She gained the confidence and knowledge to report incidents of gender-based violence within her community. Previously, victims had few clear options for support, but now Yasmin knows where to direct individuals in need. Since 2021, health facilities supported by the Accelerate Project have provided essential medical care and counseling services to 3,548 GBV survivors, offering critical assistance to those in need.
“Everyone should have access to this kind of information. It can change lives and bring safety to our community,” Yasmin emphasizes.
Inspiring Change
Through PS Kenya’s Accelerate Project, individuals like Yasmin are not only gaining valuable knowledge but also becoming advocates for positive change. Her story inspires others to make informed choices for themselves and their families, illustrating the vital role of community engagement in promoting health and well-being.
