Exploring Booth Highlights at the National DESIP Family Planning Learning Conference 2023

In the heart of Nairobi, the National DESIP Family Planning Learning Conference 2023 unfolded as a vibrant weave of innovation and commitment. The venue buzzed with energy as booths from diverse programmes showcased their initiatives, each weaving a unique narrative towards achieving one common goal. The Accelerate project booth drew much attention with its bold mission and well-positioned drop-down banners, shining a light on its mission and vision. As visitors explored, they discovered the programme’s focus on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the underserved counties. “We have touched base in 13 counties so far, having mapped them out as underserved counties as far as reproductive health is concerned,” alluded Purity Koech. From West Pokot to Kilifi, Accelerate aimed to build on Kenya’s milestones towards universal access to quality SRHR services and the prevention of GBV, leaving a lasting impact on communities facing common challenges. “Our main focus is to work in close partnership with the national and county governments in order to realise the three zeros—this is to say, zero unmet need for contraception, zero preventable maternal deaths, and zero gender-based violence and harmful practices,” added Purity. Stepping into the DESIP booth was like entering a world where visions of Kenya’s ‘Vision 2030’ came to life. The creative innovations and well-scripted booklets all pointed to the centricity of DESIP’s central mandate. The UKAID-funded programme, whose goal is to reduce maternal, newborn, and child mortality, resonated as visitors engaged with displays illustrating the transformative impact of improved SRHR on communities, especially among the young rural and marginalised populations. Mr. James, in a company of well-presented gentlemen, made a stopover at this booth. Being very inquisitive, he asked a question that shed more light on how the programme is implemented and sustained in marginalised communities. Mr. James: “This looks good; how do you ensure the sustainability of these initiatives in the long run?” Ms. Regina: “Great question! We work closely with local communities, building capacity and ensuring that the programmes we implement become an integral part of their health systems. It’s not just about providing services; it’s about creating sustainable change.” The Binti Shupavu booth radiated a girl-child empowerment vibe. A 360-degree fresh take on providing information and access to contraception to women The girl-led approach echoed through the Y-Facility, a safe space where young women connect, learn, and own their stories of growth. Visitors marvelled at the transformative journey it offered, guiding young women towards self-determination and equipping them with skills and confidence for a brighter future. The USAID Private Sector Engagement (PSE) booth, adorned with visuals depicting the project’s mission: to partner with the private sector for rapid advancements in local manufacturing, Visitors were taken through a journey, showcasing success stories of partnerships that not only fueled economic growth but also brought forth locally available health options. The booth celebrated the richness of local resources. Interactive displays allowed visitors to explore and understand the journey, highlighting the economic and health benefits of utilising locally available options. As the conference ended, the booths stood not just as displays but as testaments to the collective efforts driving reproductive health forward. The DESIP National Family Planning Learning Conference 2023 wasn’t just an event; it was a celebration of progress, collaboration, and the unwavering commitment to transforming lives across Kenya.
