Artificial Intelligence (AI) is redefining the way organizations around the world approach problem-solving, efficiency, and service delivery. At PS Kenya, this technological evolution is not just a concept for the future, it is already quietly transforming how we deliver impact. As a leader in the health sector in Kenya with a strong private sector arm, PS Kenya stands at the unique intersection of social good and market-driven solutions. This positioning enables us to integrate AI tools in ways that enhance our work in health communication, product distribution, data analytics, and private sector engagement.
One of the most impactful ways through which PS Kenya has embraced AI is through the use of chatbots and mobile-based tools that provide accurate and timely health information. In our work around sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), PS Kenya in collaboration with Population Services International, developed and deployed the Binti Shupavu USSD code, a platform that enables adolescent girls to dial in and access age-appropriate SRHR information discreetly and affordably. This tool is particularly effective in low-resource settings where smartphone access and internet connectivity may be limited. In addition, our Confirm Unajijua chatbot was developed as part of our HIV awareness efforts, enabling users to ask questions about HIV self-testing in a confidential, personalized way, helping demystify the process and reduce stigma. During the COVID-19 pandemic, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, we rolled out the Jali chatbot, which provided factual information on prevention, symptoms, and local health protocols, helping communities stay informed and protected. These digital tools, powered by AI and natural language processing, have allowed us to connect with diverse audiences.
AI has transformed PS Kenya’s behavior change communication campaigns by enabling real-time insights through tools like social media analytics and digital dashboards, enabling us to sharpen our targeting and improve message delivery. AI-supported systems help us understand what content resonates most with specific audiences, allowing us to customize and refine our campaigns under our various reproductive health projects as well as product marketing. These technologies provide deeper behavioral insights, improve campaign reach, and enable us to adjust communication strategies on the fly, helping us engage Kenyans more meaningfully and effectively.
In the realm of monitoring, evaluation, and learning, PS Kenya is using AI to process large volumes of data quickly and meaningfully. Our fieldwork generates vast amounts of information, from community feedback and beneficiary interviews to partner reports. AI tools assist in analyzing qualitative data, identifying recurring themes, and generating real-time learning insights. This enhances our ability to adapt programs based on evidence and ensure that our work is continually informed by the realities on the ground.
At the heart of PS Kenya’s digital innovation is SaraMed, a homegrown Health Management Information System that, while not AI itself, lays the groundwork for intelligent health solutions. Through the digitization of patient records, streamlining of clinic operations, and enabling real-time data access, SaraMed strengthens the efficiency and responsiveness of healthcare delivery. Its robust infrastructure positions it as a natural platform for future AI integration, supporting possibilities like predictive analytics, automated alerts, and smarter inventory management. With its flexible, secure, and user-friendly design, SaraMed is more than a management tool, it’s a stepping stone toward a future where data and intelligence work hand in hand to improve health outcomes in Kenya.
Ultimately, our use of AI is guided by purpose. At PS Kenya, we believe in leveraging innovation to advance equity, efficiency, and empowerment. We recognize the importance of ethical AI use and are committed to ensuring that data systems are inclusive, transparent, and respectful of the communities we serve.
As we look to the future, PS Kenya remains committed to scaling what works. The journey toward smarter, more responsive health systems is well underway, and AI is already playing a pivotal role. Embracing intelligent tools allows us to not only keep pace with global innovation but also actively shape a healthier, more empowered Kenya.
